Elvis in Berlin
Tuesday, 9th of September, 2008 14:33 pm.
We received the child by 9:30 in the morning. They got here way tired thanks to the long trip. Elvis’s legs got asleep after the long flying. Although Elvis was tired; his face looked content. We took him directly to the hospital and after filling up paperwork, answering questions, doing a blood test, and an even doing an ecography on him. Elvis’s ecography finished after 2 hours; and after it Elvis was finally taken to the Cardiologists. Elvis was collaborating with the doctors, considering the long trip and the time he waited before receiving his actual medical checking. Soon after, both mother and son got asleep for the demanding of the trip and the long day at the hospital. Although these Cardiologists did not give then a diagnosis; we know Elvis will be seen by the best physicians in Germany. The plan for tomorrow is inserting in Elvis’ heart a catheter that contains a micro-camera. In that way physicians will know what to do with Elvis’ heart and the plan to follow for the day to come. I left Mayela (Elvis’ mother) in a nice hotel where her room is 2 minutes away from where Elvis was hospitalized. The room was very welcoming; it had a TV and a hot shower. Mayela will be able to have breakfast and lunch there; but she will have dinner at the hospital’s cafeteria. She will enjoy of privacy on her room when she will be ready to take a rest. It was allowed for Elvis going and visits his mother’s room at the next door hotel. Mayela can stay at the hospital all the time she wants; but she cannot get a bed at the same room where her child is at. This was owed to the fact that Elvis was shearing his room with another two girls who had the same illness.

Elvis culminate the first part of evaluation; which consisted on putting a micro-camera on his heart by using a catheter. Yesterday, physicians weren’t really optimistic about Elvis’ heart condition compared to today after doing the catheter-evaluating test. They indicated that it was possible to operate him; and put him a peacemaker to help control his heart disease. Unfortunately, the doctors also accepted that Elvis’ case is a hard issue to solve; and that after the surgery Elvis will live better than now but not fully recovered.
Friday, September 12th, 2008
Early today, Elvis started to recover from the critical condition where he was. We hope that the Cardiologists will give us the date for the Elvis’ final surgery. Elvis’ mom: Mayela; was authorized to stay night and day on Elvis’ room.
Elvis’ face is happy and it looks fine. To keep his mind a bet busy it was installed a DVD player on his room so that he may watch cartoons in Spanish. His cardiac rhythm often gets quite irregular; but this condition is always stabilized day and night at the hospital. Elvis is on oxygen therapy; unfortunately today Elvis had to go back into a shared room since his condition is not as critical as it was before. It is a possibility that Mayela will be able to stay next to Elvis all night long tonight.
The great day for Elvis will be this next Friday since it will be a quite difficult surgery to go through. Elvis is not only getting a peacemaker but a reconstruction. The doctors will send to Ecuador all the documents in English. Mayela was informed today all about Elvis’ surgery. She is also aware of the high risk this surgery has; but we would rather will leave it to God this situation, and pray that all ended up fine so that we will see our dear Elvis attending to school or riding a bike like any other kid of his age do.
The surgery was a success. The doctors were pleased and content. Elvis has won the doctors and nurses’ heart. They will keep him a while on intense therapy. The recovery stage will be long. We all are here happy and very thankful to God for His blessings.
Thank goodness Elvis left today the intense therapy room and is now starting his recovery in another room. The doctors were happy to see that Elvis is now talking, eating and certainly missing Ecuadorian food. He does not have any cable on his body; with the exception of a probe and the oxygen tube. His tongue is not purple anymore, and he is starting to learn how to bread through his nose. He already asked his Daddy to start inflating Elvis’ bike tires, since “he will soon need them”.
Elvis not longer has blue-gum or blue-lips. His hands and feet are now white. His nails still are a bet blue as always. This morning the doctors removed the last catheter Elvis had and authorized him to walk a little bet.
Elvis is now authorized to walk around the hospital’s exterior patios. He is quite bored about the hospital and his room. He has now lots of energy, sleeps very little, and is now quite active; which also represents a very exhausting day for Mayela. The doctors have asked not to stop him; since he will soon find his own limits. This is the last weekend at this hospital. Starting next week, Elvis will be able to go to Mayela’s hotel and stay with her. After a complete checking; doctors will definitely discharge Elvis from the hospital. A lot of us still cannot believe how soon Elvis’ recovery has passed by. The physician has given us yet a date for us to leave; but it seems like we are going to have to move our departure date in order to leave sooner of what was originally planned.
Greetings,
Sandra Landgraf |

Cerrito, 26 September 2006
Hi! How are you?
I imagine excellent. This is Christian Riquelme, one of the many patients that have passed through your hands. I am 10 years old and live in Cerrito, Presidente Hayes, El Chaco Paraguay .
I'd like to first thank the God Almighty for giving me this happiness; and of course to you Doctors of Charity Anywhere, the Paraguayan Foundation, and the Peery Foundation who made my dream come true. Maybe I do not know all of your names, but I keep in my heart the very best memory of each and everyone of you. Especially Claudia, who gave me courage and trust in addition to some mothers too. Thanks!
Who would have thought that on Saturday the 23 rd of September (two days before spring time) my mom would say to me, "Son.we should go now to see the doctors so that they will be able to see you." I didn't want to go, but mom insisted. Oh well.we ended up going just as mom wanted. Who would've thought that upon arriving there something would attract my attention powerfully, the kindness of the doctors who treated me. Somebody with a smile told me, "We will do surgery on you." It was shocking at first, but later I said, "Yes!" with excitement. The surgery started and from then on my life was different, A sweet reality!
When I was a child I was different than everybody else. I still remember that a classmate laughed at me because as we were doing math we used our fingers to count, and my fingers would stick together as we counted. I told my grandma once that I'd rather cut my fingers and not have the same problem ever again. I had always kept a pair of scissors underneath my pillow, but recently my grandma discovered them. Then from that day on my mom and grandma promised me they would help me fix my strange fingers.
Thank goodness the day of my surgery came faster than I could have ever imagined. I feel much better now, and so happy and as useful as any other child my age. I also have a desire to improve as a human being now that I know my fingers will be cured and rehabilitated. I never would have imagined that my surgery would make me the most popular kid in the clinic. Just thinking that my picture is going to travel on the internet all over the world. I don't want to lose my hope of someday shaking the hand of the doctor who fixed my hand. I dream to be a soccer player someday. I dream to dedicate one goal to the doctor who fixed my hand in a big stadium full of people in Ecuador .
May God Bless those Non Profit organizations that arrived here in Paraguay and especially for helping such a small poor community as "Cerrito".
I will never forget you guys, or your pictures.
BYE NOW
CHAU
Christian Daniel Riquelme
