In order to start this 2008 efficiently, it was scheduled to visit the Quito Elderly Center in the old section of town. This elderly center is assisted by the Mariana de Jesus Foundation. This foundation provides feeding, protection, recreational games, and love to very old individuals. These old citizens normally were at first beggars; but some time later these people can be rehabilitated into society. During the afternoon hours this center also turns to be a welcoming facility for working mothers and children. Lunch here is given for free as well as school guidance for those who do not have parents then to guide them. The 10th of January, 2008 was the day when our mission was schedule to get there. Under a reliable inglete of covenant between the Charity Anywhere Foundation and the Mariana de Jesus Foundation; both foundations have as the common goal to serve those in real need thanks to their Christian believes. That day our team was able to take care of children and elderly people. Both groups attended to the same facility on different hours. Ophthalmology, General Medicine, and Dentistry was offered to all of them. For this mission our team was made of the following doctors and dentists: Dr. Isabel Zambrano DDS (Dental Paediatrician), Dr. Ximena Tapia DDS (General Dentist), and Engineer J. Zambrano (Sterilization area). The two doctors were: Dr. Alberto Vargas (Epidemiologist) and Dr. Luis Grau (Ophthalmologist). Our medical team also counted with volunteers as Greg Jones RN, Tricia Beck RN and Luis Moreno (Pharmacy Student). Ophthalmology took care of 49 patients, of whom two of them belonged to the group of those who normally come in the afternoon. The other 47 Ophthalmology patients were seen in the morning and most of them were Elderly people. As far as General Medicine, 34 patients were seen by our doctor. Ten of these patients belonged to the age group of children and the others were exclusively elderly people. |

As far as medicines for these people, the “Mariana de Jesus Foundation” provided them all to be able to consult the doctors and then receive their medical prescriptions. In that way, the Covenant signed between both foundations (M. de Jesus & Charity Anywhere) was kept and fulfilled too. Charity Anywhere provided of corrective lenses to twelve elders and three others were given the frames they needed for their lenses. |

CANTON CAÑAR - ECUADOR, JANUARY 14 - 18, 2008 |
| |
| Cañar County: this county is located at the northern part of the Cañar province. This ecuadorian province is surrounded at north by the Chimborazo province; at South the province of Azuay and the counties of Biblian and Azogues; at East the county of Azogues; and at West the province of Guayas. The altitude there is 3.160,00 meters above the sea level; and the average temperature is 11, 8 C°. The extension of this county is 1751, 20 square km. Being this the county with the largest area at the province of Cañar occupying a 56, 07% of the provincial territory. This county is divided in 12 districts: Chontamarca, Ventura, San Antonio, Gualleturo, Juncal, Cañar, Zhud, General Morales, Ducur, Chorocopte, Ingapirca, and Honorato Vasquez. The Orography of the Cañar County is located at the Andes region and it has a quite hilly uneven topography. |
|
It is easy to find elevations of various altitudes on its geography. An example on that are the Bueran Mountains with an average of 3806 mts. above the sea level; also the Molobog and Huirapungo range with at less 3490 mts. above the sea level. There are also the Chichil range where the Cutuhuay and Bulobulo mountains are the tallest. The Gualleturo district is another area where the ranges of Puruvin, Malal and Caucay are at.
Since the Cañar County owns a wide spread area of territory that gives it boundaries with the coastean province of Guayas as you live the western side of this county. The Pucuhuayco and Zhamzhan rivers pass by this county which makes this area fairly well provided of water sources. The “Culebrillas” lake and the “Culebrillas” river are tributans of the Silante River; which ultimately will become the Cañar River. This very last has another tributans as the Celel, Saint Vincent, and Tisay rivers that eventually will finish their routes at the Naranjal River-which is at the Ecuadorian region of the Coast. The Naranjal River is a tributary of the great Guayas River that deposits its waters on the Pacific Ocean. The weather on the Cañar county is a variety of climates that go from moor land on 8, 62°C; moderate weather on 11,18 °C with storm showers that normally put 13,3 or up to 67 millimetres of water. The Cañar County also counts with a Sub Tropical weather that normally goes from 18 up to 26 °C mainly at the districts of Chontamerca, Ventura, San Antonio and General Morales. The variety of climates determines the diversity of crops and products. The average moisture here is of 73%.
With the previous antecedents it was organized the Medical Mission to the Cañar county; keeping in mind that the last year we already had our first experience serving there. The participants of this mission were: Dr. Alberto Vargas (Epidemiologist); three dentists on Dr. Ximena Tapia (General Dentist); Dr. Juan del Valle (General Dentist); Dr Andrés León (General Dentist), Mr. Carlos Celín (technician), Engineer Julio Zambrano along with six foreign volunteers: Greg Jones, Tricia Beck, Lindsay Wyatt, Shelly Lucas and Laura Sorenson as register nurses and lastly we also counted with Luis Moreno (pharmacy student). The 14th of January was the day when our team left headquarters in Quito, and after an 8 hour ride we finally arrived to the Cañar County having a desire to share our talents to this population. The medical care was done on the following way: |

| As far as the medical attention given, it should be mention that the Paediatrician and Gynaecologist were local professionals. In fact, our local coordinator in the Cañar area is Dr. Faust Ortega (Paediatrician). He works for the county government and consequently aspects related to logistics were taken care of giving our team a very welcoming atmosphere to work in. Even though the full amount of patients seen after this mission was not really what we truly expected; those who were benefited by our medical team were quite thankful and glad of our presence there. It seems like the reason for all of this was the lack of promotion. Most of those who actually were able to visit our doctors confessed us that quick TV and Radio spots were promoting our medical campaign there. Cañar is only a county and not a city. A lot of families had to travel from other counties to get some medical care for free. After all of these shortcomings, finally our campaign started and finished with no more problems. On this time, the inhabitants from this region had enough time and patience to be well taken care of. We also try to give them some words of encouragement to go through their hard times.
