TENA, MAY 20, 2006

After a long, bumpy, yet enjoyable bus ride through the Amazon we arrived at a small town in the middle of the jungle. We ate a great dinner and exhausted, retired to our hotel.
The next morning following breakfast we set up practice at the local LDS branch meeting house. Along with about 10 LDS missionaries and 10 doctors and students local to Quito, we (the interns) started another long, but fulfilling day of service. We created our usual set up which includes a pharmacy, diagnoses rooms for doctors, an oral evaluation center, teeth extraction and restoration stations, and a fluoride/oral hygiene education station.
In about five hours we managed to help over 100 local people. I worked in the fluoride and education station where I helped children learn about how to brush their teeth. I also distributed tooth brushes and tooth paste to children. Out of the many children I have treated and given tooth brushes to in the past month only 2 children had ever owned one before.
After we finished for the day we went and saw monkeys and started our journey home. It was a great experience to be able to help so many people and to feel like we had made a difference. It was also an amazing to be able to see the Amazon jungle.
