Between the 14th and 17th of June; the Charity Anywhere staff had the chance to visit the small village of Juan Montalvo and the county of Daule at the Ecuadorian province of Guayas thanks to the invitation the dentists of Dr Jorge Montalvo DDS (Oral Surgeon) and Lily Valverde (Dental Paediatrician). The both of them are married and live at the province of Guayas. They had already served as volunteers for Charity Anywhere doing humanitarian Missions such as the Paraguay 2007 Humanitarian Expedition. Dr. W. Zambrano coordinated this project with his friend Dr. Jorge Montalvo. For this project; the Charity Anywhere staff had the chance to count with 3 Family Doctors. They were Dr. Alberto Vargas (Medical Epidemiologist); Dr. Gloria Polo (Internal Medicine Specialist); Dr. Olga Farinango-“Nantu” (Medical Practitioner-American-Indian Medicine Specialist). Our staff was made of 5 dentists: Dr. Washington Zambrano DDS. (Oral Surgeon-Implantologist); Dr. Jorge Montalvo (Oral Surgeon-Orthodontist); Dr. Lily Valverde (Dental Paediatrician); Dr. Isabel Zambrano (Dental Paediatrician and Dr. Ximena Tapia DDS. Our staff also was supported by a Scottish group of dental students from the Glasgow Dental School. The names of these students were: Kisrty Mackenzie, Katie Morrison, Kerry Size, Nicole Burns, Jessica, Catherine Copsey, Joanne Elizabeth Boyd, Sarah Constance Devanny, Julie Anne Gibson, Gayle Macvicar, Catherine Mc Court and Laura Bryce. The translator was Mr. Juan Zambrano; the technician was Carlos Celín; and the Project Assistant was Aimee Hickey. Our trip lasted 12 hours; and consequently all of our participants and volunteers arrived exhausted. Fortunately enough; Dr. Jorge Montalvo was ready to receive us at his property in the well know town of Salinas; which was absolutely welcoming and nice. At the next day our team had to go to the small village of Montalvo which is located 30minutes away from Salinas and where the majority of its inhabitants are artisan or fishermen with a low social income and obviously with a lot of unfulfilled needs. As far as sanitarian infrastructure is concern; this village does not even count with a federal medical center and that has caused isolation. When a patient needs medical assistance of emergency there in Montalvo; immediately the patients’ relatives takes him/her to either Salinas or Guayaquil. This represents a very challenging difficulty for those who live isolated there at the village of Montalvo. |

On this way our staff completed our full day of service in the village of Montalvo. Great experience that reminded us the existence of villages that are until nowadays forgotten by governmental administrations. It was impacting to see who appreciated was our medical and dental assistance there at the village in Montalvo. At the end of that day; our team got all ready for leaving Salinas and go to the town of Daule. According to the Ecuadorian Historian Emilio Estrada; the word DAULE comes from the indian language of the “Cayapas tribe”. This word by itself means “the place where fishing is done with a capturing net”. At next; it is going to be shown important information on the DAULE County: it is localized on the coaster region of Ecuador and belongs to the province of GUAYAS. Its total population is made of 86.000 inhabitants. Thirty two thousand of them live on the urban area of Daule; but 54 thousand people live on the surrounding rural areas of this town. Only 7.038 houses had the service of potable water according to the National Institute of Statistics and Census back in 2001.A 37, 5% of the houses in town get water from either rivers or natural springs. A 13, 1% of the population in Daule gets the water they need from delivering trucks, water wells, etc. Daule has a surface of 475 square kilometres; and it counts with 4 rural villages: Laureles, Limonal, Juan Bautista Aguirre and Lojas. Daule also has a “satellite” rural village of: La Aurora. There are also 180 small villages in this same area; where the Daule river passes by. The topography is fairly planed; and the surphace of this county is 461, 6 square kilometers. This river is hardly ever used to navigate; but the main access to the river is the old highway that was repaired and enlarged by the Honourable Province Council of Guayas. There is a large amount of farms where cattle, sheep, horses or fowl are raised. The water of the local rivers is good for agriculture and produces a wide variety of fishes for humans to consume. The inhabitants of Daule dedicate themselves to work on at least 30,000 hectares of rice. These people also dedicate to export tropical fruits such as mango, banana, etc. Sweet corn it is also another product of a remarkable consume and production in Daule. With enough corn in town; some families dedicate to do aviculture. Cattle farming and stockbreeding are other activities that Daule people do. The main industry in the region is for those who own minds that process the rice and corn production turning them into flower or rice with no waste sings. This area is also recognized for the artisan handmade straw huts (panama huts), hammocks, brooms, and a great variety of accessories for horse ridding made of leather. The county of Daule is one of those who have grown so much over the last 10 days. Its urbanity and commercial activity is owed to the daily effort put by every single inhabitant of this county that knows how to keep active business between the two major cities of Ecuador: Quito and Guayaquil. Daule is a quite visited town from various origins. Its ranchos or farms are a tropical paradise for those who are after it. The Daule River is also quite visited by those who come for strict swimming in two great areas a parted for it: Mate and the Daule River pounds. The most remarkable festivals there include the Catholic celebration to the ¨Lord of the Miracles¨ or the other to the ¨Black Christ¨ both celebrated every year on September 14th. . Another important celebration for Daule is the day when it officially became one County for the ecuadorian province of Guayas (July 16th). Once in Daule; our team of professionals and volunteers had t coordinate its activities with the local Catholic Priest who was expecting of our arrival. The Medical Consult behaved this way:
