LOMA DE PUENGASI, ECUADOR, JUNE 23, 2007

The 23rd of June a service project was scheduled to be able to visit the neighbourhood of “The Palm-threes”-at the Puengasi area; which is a part of southwest Quito. Our mission director was Dr. Washington Zambrano, and we also counted with some LDS. missionaries to volunteer for us. At 7:00 am that morning, we all got together at the foundation’s headquarters located at north part of town; and from then we travelled for an hour and a half to arrive to project’s area. Our doctors were Dr. Vargas, Polo, Juan Zambrano and Adriana Calderon at pharmacy, Sister Nickerson and Wallace at the vital-signs triage and vaccinations, Sister Hansen and Sanchinelly organizing the coming in of patients and Elders Doxey as well as De Jong as our receptionists. Our mobile clinics were installed at one of the LDS. Church chapels; and people started to come by 9 am. A total of 105 consults were attended, of which 35 of them (33, 3%) were males and 70 (66, 7%) were females. Fifty people got their common-cold vaccination; therefore the total amount of vaccinations for that day was completely gone; and a total of 113 prescriptions were given by the pharmacy on an average of 2 medicines per patient, in other words 8 of our dental patients also received medical prescription at the same time. The following age-groups describe how our medical attention was given on this project:

On this project the group of 6 up to 15 year olds attended on its majority to medical consult. A 62% of them had intestinal parasites, a 39% of them bronchi-pulmonar diseases and with a 21% they consulted us for skin problems. According to age-group tendencies, the rest of age-groups had the same kind of illnesses found on previous service project; which includes high blood pressure, hart-coronary diseases, overweight, low back pain, arthritis, high cholesterol rate, high glycaemia, diabetes, bronchi-pulmonary diseases, common-colds, coughing, eye-infections, vaginatis, otitis.
On the Dental field some dentists like Tapia, S. Arias and C. Arias; plus our volunteers on Julio Zambrano, Jared Gunnel (sterilization area), Thalia Espinoza, Alicia Guerrero (fluoride treatments), Oswald Veloz and Maria Eugenia Zambrano (as dental assistances) and Carlos Celìn (who is our technician). A total of 72 patients were taken care of; of whom 66 restorations were done, 14 exodontias, 35 cleanings; which all together represent a big total of 115 dental procedures. The patients that received fluoride were 45, and all of them got toothpastes at the same time. These children were 4 year olds up to 11 year olds. Fifty pieces of cloth plus 60 toothbrushes were given for free at the pharmacy. The percentage of attended patients in relationship to their ages was the following:

After serving this community we had a great satisfaction. On this occasion we didn’t find any clinical case that may deserve medical attention and being published on our website too. From this point of view, fortunately enough for us the Puengasi`s hill people in southwest Quito was healthy enough.

CRYSTAL CELEBRATION & OPEN HOUSE - ECUADOR, JUNE 29, 2007

Starting this January, the Charity Anywhere Foundation which headquarters is based in Twin Falls, Idaho has turned fifteen years of disinterested community service anywhere. This organization has been particularly working in Ecuador for seven years now; where a lot of pro-service activities have changed the live of many people. These activities have always involved communities and local leadership; which has always been successful and catching to governmental authorities. In fact; the National Government of Ecuador recognized Charity Anywhere’s selfless work by granting it a Non Profit Organization status on the date: March 20th 2007. This recognition is a wonderful blessing; but it is also a great responsibility upon the Charity Anywhere’s leadership. In order to accomplish its vision and goals; Charity Anywhere foundation will always work hard to serve anyone anywhere.
With the idea on mind to celebrate fifteen years of selfless service anywhere; the Charity Anywhere’s extension in Ecuador organized and Open House on a prestigious local hotel. The main idea behind this event was to display to anyone the selfless desire Charity Anywhere functionaries and volunteers use to serve anyone anywhere; and if it was possible to be able to find some generous donors or funding sources to our ongoing project through those who would attend during that day. This event also was looking forward to invite and involve other prospective volunteers on the medical, dental surgical or construction fields.

The celebration of these fifteen years of existence for Charity Anywhere counted with its International President and founder: Gordon Lyle Carter who also brought along his son. It is remarkable to see who much enthusiasm, energies and time the Charity Anywhere’s functionaries and volunteers put on this event to make it look very as a very transcendental and serious event. The newspaper “El Commerce”- the most know in the Quito area; published a letter of invitation to anyone and the media to cover this particular event. The radio station “Ecua-radio” did an interview to the Legal Representative for Charity Anywhere here in Ecuador, Dr. Washington Zambrano. He utilized this opportunity to invite people from various areas of Ecuador to come and take a part of this Open House. It is also remarkable to mention that we had private companies participating on this event staring by 10a.m. until 6pm. The following is a list of those companies that were with us during our Open House: Travel Agency Metropolitan Touring, City of Otavalo government, Central University of Quito-Dental School, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days, the Ecuadorian Navy, City of Santa Cruz government, Porta Cell Phone Company and Expocomex Business Company. It should be mention that all the mentioned companies or governments have partaken of some sort of Human-Relief Activity with Charity Anywhere on previous occasions making this place the appropriate atmosphere to talk about what Charity Anywhere does for Ecuadorians in real need.
Charity Anywhere Foundation utilized this event to help assist those who would come giving them dental or medical check-outs for free. Loyal to its principles, our volunteers did everything they could to help move this important part of our Open House too. Our foreign dental students from Scotland did dental diagnosis using an Intra-Oral Camera, some fillings and cleanings. Some of the local dental students were also allowed to do some dental procedures too under the supervising eye of our Dental Department Coordinator, Dr. Isabel Zambrano. Charity Anywhere Foundation also gave up fifty Common-Cold vaccinations at some point of this day. But the most impressive donation came when the president of the foundation-Gordon Lyle Carter authorized to donate hospital and surgical as well as orthopaedic items to be given to the Otavalo and Santa Cruz city governments. The Foundation’s President re-signed and formalized the already existent Letters of Convents between Charity Anywhere with the city governments of Santa Cruz and Otavalo. Continuing this desire to collaborate; our President also announced the brought of several containers full of donations to especially help the cities mentioned above.
Central University of Quito-Dental School also mentioned its desire to now work more formally in association to the Charity Anywhere Foundation through the signature of a Letter of Convent between both. This convent was immediately signed in front of the assisting crowd. The participation of dancing and folkloric-music groups from the city of Otavalo helped people to feel happy and proactive to our cause. We would like to thank anyone who helped move this project along, starting from our Board of Directors in America, our Local Leadership here in Ecuador, and our wonderful volunteers that never hesitate to try to make the difference in the lives of many people by supporting our goals and vision.

OTAVALO - ECUADOR, JULY 2 - 6, 2007

From July 2nd up to the 6th a Dental-Surgical and Medical mission was organized by Dr. Washington Zambrano as the Project Director, Gordon L. Carter as well as his son Clint L. Carter as Project Assistants; and Dr. Olga Farinango as Charity Anywhere’s  Local-Coordinator there at the city of Otavalo, province of Imbabura.
Otavalo is a small town in the mountains located 100 km. north from the city of Quito. As we were going to Otavalo, our group could see pristine lakes and active volcanoes. Otavalo is a well known Indian village mostly owed to its industrious artisans, folklore, history, traditions and cultural exchange with foreigners from anywhere. Therefore Otavalo is touristic area for excellence. Touring-related companies offer this city as a must do when people want to travel and get to know Ecuador from deep inside. But Otavalo is also a small community with big medical-limitations. Consequently, our mission’s motto was to be God and do God with enthusiasm towards Otavalo people.
Our volunteers were Dr Vargas and Polo for General Medicine, Juan Zambrano and Marianela Zambrano at the Pharmacy, Sister Wallace, Nickerson, Hansen and Sanchinelly were our nurses. We also had local volunteers in Mss. Alicia Guerrero, Thalia Espinoza and Adriana Calderon. The Otavalo city’s government provided us of 5 individuals to help move along this project; we also had 5 radio stations that helped promote our medical missions in the following native languages: Kichiwa and Quichua.
The radio stations were Radio Bahai and Radio Iluman.

We did 757 medical consults. The age and gender distribution was the following:

Total Patients

Thanks to the assistance of some LDS Church-members that volunteered for us we were able to accomplish 196 Glucose tests, procedure that helped detect some diabetic patients that didn’t even know they suffered this medical problem. One of this cases needed hospitalization since this patient had a very bad Glycaemia (542 mg/dl.) We had 62 people showing up for Common-Cold vaccinations. Our 500-vaccine supply now is gone. It should be mentioned that the Quifatex Inc. Lab donated these vaccinations.

As far as the surgical part of this mission; we counted with Dr. Ramirez and Naranjo to help take care of 18 patients. The two surgeons did 22 procedures: 5 Griseous Cyst exegesis, 6 nevus exegesis (one of which was congenital and it therefore did deserve to be done study with a Biopsy), 1 lipom exegesis, palmareous-wart, a Biopsy on an ulcerated chronic lesson, 4 repairing-correcting esthetic surgeries. It is worth to mention that these 4 procedures mentioned above were needed to finish at Dr. Ramirez’s private consult, and obviously free of charge. It was prescript 771 medical and dental prescriptions with an average of 2 medicines per every person

As far as observed Pathologies, we noticed that babies younger than one year old suffered of Diaper Rush, and Respiratory diseases probably owed to the isolation life-style these families have. Additionally; it was pretty evident to see how most of these young mothers raced their babies. Fortunately enough, on this tribe still is common to see mothers breastfeeding their babies. Consequently no babies suffered of Mal-nutrition. From 1 year olds up to 5; the 53, 8% consulted the doctor because of intestinal parasites, whereas 15, 8% did because of respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, common colds and Pharynx-amygdalate infections. Skin problems had an 11, 4% out of our final number of consults. We found cases of Piodermitis, Derma tic mycosis. These diseases are normal things for Otavalo people to live with; somehow they co-exist with no issues having lice on their families. Otitis and Conjunctivitis were found with an
8, 3% out of our consults, and they both were produced owed to bad personal hygiene. Perhaps some chronic diarrheic illness cases were found in Otavalo; neither of them really deserved medical hospitalization. A 7, 4% of the total amount of our patients did consult our doctors because of diarrheic problems.
The 58% of our patients (who belonged to the age-group of 6 year olds up to 15 year olds) did consult us because of intestinal parasites, and skin problems with a 21, 5%. The bronchi-respiratory diseases left us a sad memory on this mission. Around 10:30 am our doctors checked a young boy on very bad medical conditions: Alejandro Mauricio Castañeda, who was an eleven year old not knowing he suffered of Bilateral Pneumonia. Because of the urgency of this case, the young boy was immediately hospitalized; but unfortunately Alejandro didn`t make until the end of that day. This sad experience gave us the clear idea of how little is the public-health coverage in this particular part of Ecuador; and how little chances people have to take care of their health overall. A lot of children die because of lack of medical attention or simply because they cannot afford to pay it. Only a 17, 9% were Bronchi-Pulmonary diseases out of our total amount of medical consults. That was high! At this same age group, some teenagers had 12 cases of Dysmenorrhoea (6, 8%) and 9 cases of urinary infections. Six pregnant women attended to see the doctor because of Pre-natal control, and they all were women between 16 up to 45 years of age. The number of 6 pregnant women is low by itself. Considering that a high percentage of Otavalo families are   now dissolved for various reasons; we can imagine the low number of pregnant women coming to our consults is owed mostly owed to alcoholism or physical abuse from their husbands. A 19, 6% of this group consulted because of parasites, low back problems, neuralgic diseases or poly arthritic problems with a 15, 7%. It is relatively often to find dyspeptic problems in some of our patients. On this mission an 11% of our patients consulted our doctor for this reason. The female population in Otavalo also consulted our doctors because of Bulb-vaginatis, dysmenorrhoea, pre-menopausesic-disease and infections of Urinary kind with a percentage of a 15, 9%. The bronchi-pulmonary diseases with a 10, 4% had a special cog notation this particular time: 8 patients assisted to our consults with clear evidences of going through Tuberculosis-illness produced in isolated family groups where poverty causes the ideal atmosphere for this illness to be highly contagious. Obviously, further lab tests-like the Basiloscopy Serried test-will confirm or not the presence of Tuberculosis on the last mentioned patients. A 9, 4 % of our anaemic patients consulted us because of their obvious and exposing physical appearance. Skin problems had a percentage of 7, 2%. Other diagnoses represented illnesses on a small percentage which won’t really concern us much. At the following age group from 46 up to 64 year olds; parasites was on an 11, 9% of the total of our consulting patients on this age group, which makes it the lowest proportion of this diagnose within of several age groups. The most common illness found at this age group was Low Back disease, Arthritis, Osteoporosis; which is easy to understand in relationship to the advanced age of those particular patients. The Gastric-Intestinal diseases as in dyspeptic disease and acid reflex disease did consult our doctors on a 18.6%. It was found 4 clinical cases of Tuberculosis, to whom were sent directly to the local Para-clinics to confirm that diagnose. It was catching to see the great demand we had for an eye-doctor consult (Ophthalmologist); mostly owed to the disease known as Ptherigium, Cataracts, and visual limitations of various kinds which percentage reached the 24,7% of our consults. Unfortunately we couldn’t offer to that population from Otavalo a permanent solution to their eye-problems; but now we are working on it.
People of 65 years of age and older also considered as the People from the “Third-Age group” did consult us because of osteoporosis, bone-articulation problems with a 34, 2%; and with a 31, 5% did consult us because another Older-age regular limitations such as eye-problem once again. Another 3 cases of Tuberculosis were also found, and High Blood Pressure disease was also present on a 13% out of the total number of consults from this particular age-group. To several of our patients we did diagnose them with the Senile Syndrome owed to the diverse symptoms found on several cases of them. They were the 18% out of the total amount of patients from this particular age-group. On Dentistry Dr. W. Zambrano, I. Zambrano, X. Tapia and the scottish volunteers on Ann Wallace, Julia Campbell, Kathryn Smith, Hazel Twycross, M. Atkinson, R. Mc. Bride, Janet Stewart, Jennifer O` Donnell, Saquib Yousab. Along to them, we also had the relevant support of Maria Eugenia de Zambrano, Julio Zambrano, Carlos Celin, Jared Gunnell, Josh and Matías Zambrano too.
A total of 444 people were assisted on whom 517 procedures were done, such as 211 Fillings, 165 Exodontias, 141 Cleanings; and 100 patients between 2 up to 14 year olds received Fluoride treatments. Our volunteer-dental lab technician gave up 10 total dental prosthetic dentures and a partial dental prosthetic denture too. Two hundred (200) cleaning kits were gave up, 217 teddy bears and 200 clothes as well.

Now that we understand better the unsatisfied need to Otavalo families which is the access to nice public health services; we finished our mission knowing our little contribution was useful to help combat poverty in Otavalo. Our souls were happy after all we could do while there.
