Sixty-three Charity Anywhere volunteers (ages 10 - 74) traveled from Utah and Idaho, U.S.A to Otavalo, Ecuador from the 26th of December 2005 to 5th of January 2006 to provide free medical, dental, eyeglasses and construction work. The volunteers from the U.S. had 3 dentists, 2 dental hygienists, 3 dental lab techs, and many other assistants to help in the dental clinic. Many volunteers helped by donating prescription eyeglasses. There were Ecuadorian medical doctors who volunteered to help with the Medical needs of the people and there was one nurse who helped the Ecuadorian medical doctors. There were also over 25 volunteers that provided service at a school in Otavalo doing construction. This was the first time Otavalo had had anyone offer service to them.
It was a fantastic experience for these volunteers and they were able to serve almost 3000 people in 3 1/2 days. All of the volunteers worked very hard without complaint and with few very minor problems and all had fun doing the work. Most of the volunteers returned to the United States on 2 February, while about 20 remained. The twenty that remained spent one more day doing dental and eyeglass service for a Monastary of nuns in Quito. |

The volunteers brought down over 100 suitcases (over 6000 pounds) full of donations to give to the people, consisting of clothing, toys, soccer balls, school supplies, wheelchairs and dental supplies. The bubbles and the soccor balls were the biggest hits. Most of the donations were given to people in outlying areas around Otavalo who were unable to travel into town for the clinics.
Some of the people of Otavalo waited all night in line to receive the service and the volunteers wished they could have served more people than they did, still most of the volunteers said they felt like they were served more than the people they helped. |
